Case Study

Enhanced Commercial
lettuce production

with purifico ozone

This case study focuses on a greenhouse client experiencing waterborne pathogens, including Fusarium, Pythium, and Olpidium. For the first few years, conventional water treatments were sufficient; however, over time, pathogens took hold within the irrigation system, eventually becoming unmanageable.

The recirculated nutrient solution was treated with a combination of oxygen nanobubbles, ultrasonic cavitation systems in return-water silos, and in-line hydrogen peroxide dosing. Despite these efforts, pathogen levels and plant disease continued to increase, resulting in necrotic roots, stunted growth, and foliar symptoms. Poor plant health led to prolonged, unpredictable cropping cycles, impacting the producer’s ability to fulfill orders and ultimately causing a loss of customers.

Purifico S160 ozone systems and Airsep AS-D oxygen concentrator

To address these challenges, Purifico S160 systems were installed on each of the greenhouse’s 100m³ silos containing recirculated nutrient solution. An additional S160 system was added to treat the source water, preventing pathogen introduction from the external environment.

AirSep AS-D systems were also implemented to provide a continuous oxygen supply for this demanding industrial setting. To evaluate the ozone system’s effectiveness, previously used water treatments were halted, relying solely on Purifico’s systems.

Healthy Plants with Purifico Ozone

Switching to Purifico Ozone’s S160 systems brought immediate improvements in water quality and plant health. Within 24 hours, turbidity was drastically reduced, transforming the water from murky brown to a clarity reminiscent of a swimming pool. Microbiological testing using qPCR revealed pathogen reductions of 1,000-10,000 times. Within two weeks, plant health visibly improved: root systems extended beyond the peat pucks instead of decaying, foliage yellowing ceased, crop growth became uniform, and the cropping cycle significantly accelerated.

Remarkably, winter growth rates exceeded any previously observed, even compared to summer months before pathogen issues arose. Impressed with these results, the client placed a rush order for additional systems to cover all fertigation systems. Within two months, Purifico delivered and installed complete water treatment for the facility, resolving a production crisis that had threatened the entire business.
